The Trump Administration
Day 315
Thursday 30 November 2017
North Korea appeared to have built the Hwasong-15 by upgrading the second stage of the Hwasong-14, which carries the missile through space after the first-stage booster drops off.
Trump and his senior aides are mulling a plan to eventually move the U.S. Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, a decision that could derail Trump’s attempts to restart peace talks between the Israelis and the Palestinians.
Trump’s mixed messages on a partial government shutdown could hamper the ability of congressional Republicans to negotiate with Democrats, whose support they need to pass spending legislation in coming weeks.
The White House has developed a plan to force out Secretary of State Rex W. Tillerson, whose relationship with President Trump has been strained, and replace him with Mike Pompeo, the C.I.A. director, perhaps within the next several weeks
By insinuating themselves into different niche online dialogues during the 2016 presidential race and pushing the conversational boundaries, the Russian trolls signaled to others in the conversation that it was acceptable to make more extreme statements.
He raised some general concerns about ballooning the deficit — one reason he voted against the Bush tax cuts in 2001 and 2003 — but stressed in his statement that he believed the tax measure would ultimately boost the economy and ease deficit issues.
“He needs to think before he tweets. We - Theresa May and I - are so different. Our profiles are completely different. She runs the country, I’m a mum from Bognor.”
About 20 minutes later, Trump realized he had the wrong Theresa and had instead tweeted at a woman named Theresa Scrivener. Scrivener has sent out a total of nine tweets to her six followers from an account set up in 2009.
Day 314
Wednesday 29 November 2017
In related news, Republican Rep. Mo Brooks—one of Moore’s former primary opponents—asserted Tuesday that one of Moore’s accusers must have “forged” a note that she says the candidate left in her high school yearbook in 1977.
Years before the ‘Access Hollywood’ tape, the president crassly bragged about a woman’s private parts during a golf weekend at Mar-a-Lago.
Conway is alleged to have violated the Hatch Act, which prohibits executive branch employees from using their government positions to campaign for or against political candidates
...lawmakers voted 52 to 48 to move the legislation forward toward a showdown vote on final passage by week’s end.
The remarks come on the heels of Pyongyang’s latest test of an intercontinental ballistic missile on Tuesday, its first in over two months. Earlier Wednesday, the president vowed that “additional major sanctions will be imposed on North Korea today.”
“Many have expected that Pyongyang would not be ready to negotiate until it deemed it had achieved a deliverable nuclear deterrent” ... Now Kim’s regime says it has achieved that deterrent.
According to a statement from the Korean Central News Agency, the ICBM is capable of carrying a "super-large heavy warhead, which is capable of striking the whole mainland of the U.S."
"Great, and we should boycott Fake News CNN. Dealing with them is a total waste of time!"
Deleted posts included "GO PUTIN! Russian president’s popularity on rise in Czech Republic!" and "VIDEO: Putin backs our Brexit".
In the past, he's attacked London Mayor Sadiq Khan for mishandling a militant attack just hours after it occurred. He misattributed a rise in crime in England and Wales to the "spread of radical Islamic terror". Now, he has retweeted a series of unverified videos posted by a far-right British nationalist group.
Day 313
Tuesday 28 November 2017
In September, the officer and his wife reported, according to one source familiar with the incident, what may have been at least one acoustic attack similar to those experienced by the diplomats in Havana.
"I think she does the best of her ability to tell the truth but also to protect the President, and so I think that there's a fine line to draw between those two things."
“In light of the President's continued attacks on freedom of the press and CNN, we do not feel it is appropriate to celebrate with him as his invited guests. We will send a White House reporting team to the event and report on it if news warrants.”
The ruling addressed a partisan legal spat at an agency thrown into chaos as two acting directors publicly laid claim to the title of rightful, if temporary, leadership.
Some hurdles still exist, including aligning the Senate version with the House bill and ensuring that the changes some senators want don’t rankle other lawmakers.
Day 312
Monday 27 November 2017
In short, the case against Conway is airtight. Or it would be, that is, if President Trump hadn’t appointed Kerner to lead the OSC.
"I just want to thank you because you are very, very special people. You were here long before any of us were here," Trump said. "Although, we have a representative in Congress who has been here a long time ... longer than you -- they call her Pocahontas!"
In a series of interviews over two weeks, the woman shared a dramatic story about an alleged sexual relationship with Moore in 1992 that led to an abortion when she was 15.
Phillips also repeatedly asked the reporter to guarantee her that Moore would lose the election if she came forward.
For years, Comcast has been promising that it won't violate the principles of net neutrality, regardless of whether the government imposes any net neutrality rules. ... This was one of the ways in which Comcast argued that the Federal Communications Commission should not reclassify broadband providers as common carriers, a designation that forces ISPs to treat customers fairly in other ways.
Comcast now vaguely says that it won't "discriminate against lawful content" or impose "anti-competitive paid prioritization." The change in wording suggests that Comcast may offer paid fast lanes to websites or other online services, such as video streaming providers, after Pai's FCC eliminates the net neutrality rules next month.
A Grassley spokesman confirmed by email that the committee didn't expect to receive the materials on Monday. "However, Mr. Kushner’s attorney is cooperating with the committee and we are in ongoing discussions to address the committee’s requests," the spokesman said.
The dueling assertions of leadership underscored the legal morass that is engulfing the agency after its first director, Richard Cordray, resigned abruptly on Friday, handing the reins to English.
With several Republican senators not yet committed to supporting the $1.5 trillion tax plan, the week is expected to be punctuated by behind-the-scenes arm twisting and deal-making as Republican leaders work to find enough votes to pass the bill along party lines.
General Hayden, who is also a former director of the National Surveillance Agency (NSA), added: "Until now it was not possible for me to conceive of an American President capable of such an outrageous assault on truth, a free press or the first amendment."
Schultz insists his exit is unrelated to any of those myriad controversies, but simply triggered by a desire to get back to private law work and back to Philadelphia, where his family has remained.
Day 311
Sunday 26 November 2017
For years, a coalition of well-funded groups on the religious right have waged an uphill battle to repeal a 1954 law that bans churches and other nonprofit groups from engaging in political activity.
Among the changes in the tax bill that passed the House this month is a provision to roll back the 1954 ban
Republicans are aiming to have the full Senate vote on the tax plan as early as this week, but the new CBO analysis showing large, harmful effects on the poor may complicate those plans.
The lawsuit was filed by English herself, not the CFPB, which took the official position that Mulvaney is in charge.
In pushing so hard, Republicans are betting they can sell this plan to the skeptical public once the legislation is signed into law
Imagine holding the job of representing the most important country on the planet, facing an exploding array of crises around the world, and focusing not on diplomacy but on fiddling around with your org chart and mundane tasks like fixing the email system.
Day 310
Saturday 25 November 2017
While it’s certainly true that ISPs do in some ways store and generate data on behalf of the user, usually as part of managing their networks, it’s equally certain that their primary purpose is to transmit data between the user and points of his or her choosing. Consequently, broadband should be classified as a telecommunications service.
"According to the text of the law, media that receive financial assistance from foreign states or organizations can be recognized as foreign agents, while the decision on which outlets will be classified as 'foreign agents' will be taken by the Ministry of Justice."
While GOP candidates distance themselves from the Senate leader, Democrats hope to turn him into the next Nancy Pelosi.
Leadership of the agency was thrown into doubt on an otherwise slow holiday weekend after President Trump and the CFPB’s outgoing head both named acting directors to head the regulatory watchdog.
Trump cares so much about Time and its cover that he wants you to think he doesn't care at all. Don't believe it.
Sufism is a strand of Islam that eschews materialism and emphasizes the inward search for God.
It's an interpretation of Islam that's radically different from what Sunni extremists believe. Many extremists see Sufism as heretical, followed only by apostates.
More and more, extremists are willing to target Sufi mosques. “Opponents of Sufism see the shrines and these living saints as idols,”
Mr. Kelly has made clear that Mr. Kushner must fit within a chain of command. “Jared works for me,” he has told associates.
Day 309
Friday 24 November 2017
By the end of the night, an agency born of the financial meltdown ... had dueling directors, and there was little sense of who actually would be in charge Monday morning.
The departures mark a new stage in the broken and increasingly contentious relationship between Mr. Tillerson and much of his department’s work force.
Militants detonated a bomb inside a crowded mosque in the Sinai Peninsula on Friday and then sprayed gunfire on panicked worshipers as they fled, killing at least 305 people and wounding at least 128 others.
Between 25 and 30 militants carried out the attack, the statement said. They barged in carrying automatic weapons and the Islamic State flag.
"I was asking the Air Force guys, I said, how good is this plane? They said, well, sir, you can't see it. I said but in a fight. You know, in a fight, like I watch on the movies. The fight, they're fighting. How good is this? They say, well, it wins every time because the enemy cannot see it. Even if it's right next to them, it can't see it. I said that helps. That's a good thing."
The problem ... is that the Senate Republicans’ tax bill would increase federal debt by more than advertised, and increased debt accumulation would counteract much — or potentially all — of the positive growth impact of tax cuts.
The relative ease of discovery raises serious questions as to just how many Russian-linked bots may still be active on Twitter, how the company identifies and removes such accounts, and whether its process for identifying accounts for its evidence was inadequate.
Day 308
Thursday 23 November 2017
Lawyers for Michael T. Flynn ... notified the president’s legal team in recent days that they could no longer discuss the special counsel’s investigation, according to four people involved in the case — an indication that Mr. Flynn is cooperating with prosecutors or negotiating a deal.
The Turks had high hopes for Donald Trump’s presidency, given his hostility to an American “establishment” that Ankara regards as irredeemably hostile to Turkey, and his almost automatic rejection of the policies of his predecessor.
Day 307
Wednesday 22 November 2017
Two days after President Trump re-designated North Korea as a state sponsor of terrorism, the country responded on Wednesday by calling the decision “a serious provocation” and vowed to keep up its nuclear and missile programs as a deterrent against the “hostile” United States.
Campaign strategist Brett Doster told CNN that Rogers wasn’t prepared to deal with the “level of scrutiny” from the media
Their message has been the same: If America’s friends in the region aspire for enhanced security, they’d best not wait for the White House to provide it. And if recent events offer any indication, the message has been received loud and clear.
Aside from Fox News, no network worked as hard as Rossiya, as Russian state TV is called, to boost Donald Trump and denigrate Hillary Clinton.
"'The essence of immorality is the tendency to make an exception of myself.' Jane Addams (1860-1935)"
Schneiderman said in a tweet his office has been investigating a "massive scheme" over the last six months to "corrupt the FCC's comment process on net neutrality by impersonating 100,000s of real Americans."
...the goal here isn't just for "more reasonable regulatory oversight" or "slightly less regulatory oversight," the goal here is almost zero oversight of one of the most predatory and anti-competitive legacy business sectors in America.
Only one economist — Stanford's Liran Einav — said that he was “uncertain” if the bills would exacerbate America's debt-to-GDP ratio. But after the survey's release, Einav said his response had been a mistake, and that he actually agrees with the economists who expect the debt ratio to soar. ... “I did it too fast and didn't read the question properly,” Einav said in an email.
After days of remaining relatively silent on the matter, Trump defended Moore on Tuesday, emphasizing the candidate's denial of the allegations and saying that "we don't need a liberal person" in the Senate
“Women are very special. I think it’s a very special time, a lot of things are coming out and I think that’s good for our society and I think it’s very, very good for women and I’m very happy a lot of these things are coming out. I’m very happy it’s being exposed.” — President Trump, remarks to reporters, Nov. 21, 2017
One said Kushner and other top White House officials believed Comey was too unpredictable after his handling of the probe into Hillary Clinton’s emails. Another said Kushner thought Democrats would cheer Comey’s firing after his handling of the Clinton investigation
Day 306
Tuesday 21 November 2017
"As many of you know, I have been very active in overturning a number of executive actions by my predecessor. However, I have been informed by the White House counsel’s office that Tater and Tot’s pardons cannot, under any circumstances, be revoked."
Telling the Justice Department to go to court to block a business transaction because of his personal animus toward a news organization, if proven, would constitute a clear-cut abuse of presidential power.
The 2020 count might be put in the hands of an inexperienced professor who wrote that 'Competitive Elections are Bad for America.'
The pick would break with the long-standing precedent of choosing a nonpolitical government official as deputy director of the U.S. Census Bureau. ... It does not require Senate confirmation, so Congress would have no power to block the hire.
Day 305
Monday 20 November 2017
Unlike them, I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth; I’m a down-to-earth, simple mall pedophile who has dated the children of real, working-class Americans.
The decision came after the Department of Homeland Security determined that the “extraordinary conditions” justifying their presence in the United States following a 2010 earthquake “no longer exist”
The Justice Department asked the Supreme Court on Monday evening to allow officials to implement the entirety of the revised policy Trump issued in September via a presidential proclamation.
'Should have happened a long time ago. Should have happened years ago,' Trump says.
Yellen's departure will mean the loss of decades of institutional knowledge. She has been part of the central bank’s leadership since 1994
The move comes amid a growing political storm over whether the Trump administration has tried to use its review of the merger to force the sale of CNN, a frequent target of the president's media criticism.
...clearing the last regulatory hurdle in a nine-year effort to build a line to carry thick crude oil from Alberta’s tar sands region to refineries on the Texas gulf coast.
One of the goals of this effort, it appears, is to prevent Trump from flying into a rage and firing Mueller, as several of his allies have suggested he do if it appears Mueller is expanding the scope of his investigation into the president’s finances.
Now to the very right of Karen Fonseca's "F--- Trump and f--k you for voting for him" sticker on the back window of her husband's white truck is the slightly smaller message, "F--- Troy Nehls and f--k you for voting for him”
So to recap: Trump needs votes in the Senate, Jones is too liberal for the White House, and the president's top adviser won't explicitly rule out Trump's campaigning for Moore.
The top national security official dismissed the president variously as an “idiot” and a “dope” with the intelligence of a “kindergartner,” the sources said. ... Both Oracle and the Trump administration heatedly denied the comments
Day 304
Sunday 19 November 2017
It was almost inevitable. Two of the biggest egos in America, President Donald Trump and LaVar Ball, the patriarch of the Ball family, coming head to head in a battle of wills.
“If we can repeal part of Obamacare as part of a tax bill and have a tax bill that is still a good tax bill, that can pass, that’s great,” ... “If it becomes an impediment to getting the best tax bill we can, then we are okay with taking it out.”
Day 303
Saturday 18 November 2017
Many world leaders say they have no illusions that they can avoid the White House on critical issues at the core of global stability, especially those related to security. But they have embraced efforts by Democratic governors and mayors to present a different face of U.S. power to the world
Trump has also established a legal fund that pays for staffers who are also involved in the investigation... There is no law that bars the president from giving gifts and money to his staffers, but in the face of a tricky investigation, this case raises questions of whether Trump’s financial help will influence staffer’s testimonies
Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser, Jared Kushner, failed to disclose what lawmakers called a "Russian backdoor overture and dinner invite" involving a banker who has been accused of links to Russian organized crime
Day 302
Friday 17 November 2017
“I’m seeing all this news lately about women speaking out against these men who acted very inappropriately toward them and the repercussions those same men now face, and I’m honestly scared of what would happen if one day I’m accused publicly by 10 or maybe even more women whom I’ve harassed or assaulted in the past,” said a visibly shaken Trump
In May, the FCC said that its comment system went down due to “deliberate attempts by external actors to bombard the FCC’s comment system with a high amount of traffic,” ... the Government Accountability Office is now investigating that DDoS attack because the FCC’s description of what happened raised some red flags, including questions as to whether or not the attack actually happened
Trump focused his Twitter-fueled mockery on a Democratic senator while largely avoiding a similar condemnation of a Republican Senate candidate facing far more allegations. The turn in the political dialogue threatened to transform a moment of cleansing debate about sexual harassment into another weapon in the war between the political parties, led by the president himself.
Angry viewers called for the anchor to move to CNN for discrediting the conspiracy theory which President Donald Trump has repeatedly touted
A recent distributional analysis from the Joint Committee on Taxation found that the Senate’s proposal ... would raise taxes for families who earn less than $75,000 when these cuts sunset.
"What you said was not right! That's all I'm saying," Hatch said. "Now I come from the lower middle class originally. We didn't have anything. So don't spew that stuff on me. I get a little tired of that crap! … I like you personally very much. But I'm telling you this bullcrap that you guys throw out here really gets old after a while. And then to do it right at the end of this is just not right."
I think what we’re seeing is an extreme politicization of Christianity. It almost does not feel like the evangelical tradition of a generation ago.
The Bible has things to say about sex. But for Jesus, in the New Testament, it’s not a major thing at all. He’s far more concerned with feeding the poor and caring for those in need. When you look back over the last century of Christian argumentation and political concern, however, it’s had a lot more to do with sex than with caring for the poor.
Day 301
Thursday 16 November 2017
In early November 2017 — nearly one year after his election victory — he was not only continuing to attack Clinton, but also calling on the FBI and the Justice Department to investigate her. He was “very frustrated” by the fact that he was unable to order those agencies to “go after” his former opponent — something he said he would very much love to do.
Many Alabama Republicans are also beginning to view the race as a referendum on McConnell and the Republican establishment more broadly, and Trump’s advisers say they fear any White House intervention is likely to backfire.
This means that M.I.T. graduate students would be responsible for paying taxes on an $80,000 annual salary, when we actually earn $33,000 a year. That’s an increase of our tax burden by at least $10,000 annually.
The House passed its version of the $1.5 trillion tax bill by a vote of 227 to 205.
Thirteen Republicans voted against the bill, and no Democrats voted for it.
The disclosures came just two days after Prime Minister Theresa May of Britain delivered a speech accusing Russia of using cyberattacks and online propaganda to “undermine free societies” and “sow discord in the West.”
Mueller’s decision to request an interview with Hicks ... also indicates he’s reached a critical point in the overall investigation... Typically, conversations with such senior-level aides are saved for near the end of a probe.
Fewer than a dozen of the 240 House Republicans said they were opposing the bill or had lodged strong objections as of Wednesday morning. The GOP can lose up to 22 votes and still pass the bill if all 434 sitting members vote Thursday.
Day 300
Wednesday 15 November 2017
The appointment of Brett Talley, 36, for a lifetime post as an Alabama federal judge is raising eyebrows because he has never tried a case.
Alabama has a law (complemented by party rules) that automatically punishes any elected officials for endorsing a candidate other than their party's. It's written such that "anti-endorsing" Moore may trigger the penalty as well: a six-year exclusion from any ballot printed in Alabama
The Trump administration plans to allow hunters to import trophies of elephants they killed in Zimbabwe and Zambia back to the United States, reversing a ban put in place by the Obama administration in 2014
“He said, ‘You can just call me Roy,’ ” says Richardson, who says this first encounter happened in the fall of 1977, just before or after her 18th birthday, as Moore, then a 30-year-old local attorney, was gaining a reputation for pursuing young women at the mall in Gadsden, Ala.
UPDATE: On the night of Wednesday, November 15, in the wake of reporting from Vox and other publications, the Trump administration announced it would allow immigrants whose applications for DACA renewal were sent before the deadline, but were left in USCIS mailboxes overnight on October 5 or were affected by the United States Postal Service slowdown, to reapply.
Obamacare ... is off to a surprisingly robust start despite the brutal developments of the past year — skyrocketing premiums, dwindling competition, unremitting Republican efforts to eradicate it.
“Obviously I’ve made a few people mad,’’ Moore told the friendly crowd. “I’m the only one that can unite Democrats and Republicans, because I seem to be opposed by both.”
The existing rule imposes a higher bar on legislation that raises federal income tax rates, imposing a three-fifths threshold for such legislation to pass, rather than a simple majority.
Pompeo has told associates that he expects the president to tap him for the position and that he’d accept the job if it’s offered to him.
Sutherland Springs, Texas, was the location of the Nov. 5 church shooting where 25 people and an unborn child were killed.
Day 299
Tuesday 14 November 2017
“Hi, this is Lenny Bernstein, I’m a reporter for the Washington Post calling to find out if anyone at this address is a female between the ages of 54 to 57 years old willing to make damaging remarks about candidate Roy Moore for a reward of between 5,000 and 7,000 dollars. We will not be fully investigating these claims however we will make a written report.”
As Cohn sat comfortably onstage, a Journal editor asked the crowd to raise their hands if their company plans to invest more if the tax reform bill passes. Very few hands went up.
The Alabama Republican Party and Moore's official senatorial campaign are now the only two entities listed on the joint fundraising agreement. This is the latest step by the Republican Party establishment to distance itself from Moore
Republicans’ tax bill can only increase the deficit by $1.5 trillion in the first 10 years, with no increase outside that window. But as it stands, neither the House tax bill nor the Senate’s passes this test.
Repealing the mandate, a longstanding Republican goal, would save hundreds of billions of dollars over the next decade. That would free up money that is earmarked to expand middle-class tax cuts.
“To have the winning side exploring the possibility of prosecuting the losing side in an election — it’s un-American, and it’s grotesque”
Sessions said Tuesday he never lied under oath about Moscow's interference in the 2016 election and said he didn't recall conversations with Trump campaign aides about their Russia-linked contacts until he saw news reports about them.
“I cannot accept, and reject, accusations that I have lied. That is a lie,” the attorney general said. “Let me be clear: I have at all times conducted myself honorably and in a manner consistent with the high standards and responsibilities of the Office of Attorney General, which I revere…My story has never changed. I’ve always told the truth.”
The job of DOJ is to investigate and prosecute crimes and potential crimes without fear or favor. Even the appearance of White House involvement in how Justice does its job is seen as a major breach of protocol.
Politics is growing more personal, polarized and pugnacious. This dynamic is particularly acute on the right. This will likely get worse before it gets better
The fact that so many on the campaign, including Donald Trump Jr., reportedly knew about the WikiLeaks communications makes it challenging, at minimum, to believe Pence had no idea.
Day 298
Monday 13 November 2017
One recent poll found that one-third of the public support it and half oppose it. Sixty percent believe it favors the rich. Majorities of the public believe corporations and high-income individuals should pay more in taxes. They believe the Republican plan would do the opposite, and they’re right.
Not all the pastors said they gave permission for their name to be be used on what appears to be a recycled letter from before the GOP primary
“My accusers are nothing but slandering opportunists taking advantage of the deteriorating influence of the patriarchy that has traditionally silenced any woman who makes such claims.”
The vice president is driving a White House agenda dominated by the conservative, anti-regulatory policies he embraced as Indiana governor.
“The general knowledge at the time when I moved here was that this guy is a lawyer cruising the mall for high-school dates,” one of the officers said.
“You are a child. I am the District Attorney of Etiwah County. If you tell anyone about this, no one will believe you”
But some senior Republicans are wary that the chorus of anti-Moore sentiment from Washington will only embolden Moore and his supporters.
Assange was a fellow you’d see / Insisting transparency’s key. / He went on to scheme / With Don and his team / In hopes of a job in DC.
“Hey Don. We have an unusual idea,” WikiLeaks wrote on October 21, 2016. “Leak us one or more of your father’s tax returns.” ... “If we publish them it will dramatically improve the perception of our impartiality,” WikiLeaks explained. “That means that the vast amount of stuff that we are publishing on Clinton will have much higher impact, because it won’t be perceived as coming from a ‘pro-Trump’ ‘pro-Russia’ source.”
“Hi Don if your father ‘loses’ we think it is much more interesting if he DOES NOT conceed [sic] and spends time CHALLENGING the media and other types of rigging that occurred—as he has implied that he might do”
“Hi Don. Hope you’re doing well!” WikiLeaks wrote on December 16 to Trump Jr., who was by then the son of the president-elect. “In relation to Mr. Assange ... It would be real easy and helpful for your dad to suggest that Australia appoint Assange ambassador to [Washington,] DC.” ... “They won’t do it but it will send the right signals to Australia”
If confirmed, the 50-year-old Azar would be thrust onto the front lines of a White House agenda that includes repealing Obamacare, reining in drug prices and rolling back regulations — goals that have remained largely unfulfilled since Trump took office.
Mr. Talley ... is the fourth judicial nominee under Mr. Trump to receive a “not qualified” rating from the American Bar Association and the second to receive the rating unanimously.
The comments go further than the majority leader's initial statement last week... McConnell said then that Moore should leave the race if the allegations were true.
Duterte's spokesman Harry Roque told CNN, however, that the topic "was not brought up," adding that Duterte brought up the "drug menace" in the Philippines and that Trump "appeared sympathetic and did not have any official position on the matter but was merely nodding his head."
A wealth of US historical evidence shows that incumbent politicians do better in elections than nonincumbents do. They’re more likely to win, and open seats are more likely to flip to the other party than are seats where an incumbent is running again are.
Day 297
Sunday 12 November 2017
Partisanship often overrides religious or moral values in the state. But Moore’s scandal could be a new litmus test.
Just 28 percent said the allegations made them less likely to vote for Moore and 34 percent said the allegations made no difference in their decision.
“I think it demonstrates to Mr. Putin that Donald Trump can be played by foreign leaders who are going to appeal to his ego and try to play upon his insecurities, which is very, very worrisome from a national security standpoint.”
Day 296
Saturday 11 November 2017
It’s remarkable enough that Trump openly admitted he just believed whatever Putin told him. It’s even more startling when you realize that in January, the FBI, CIA, and NSA clearly assessed that Russia did interfere in the election — and that Putin was behind it.
“No,” Putin's press secretary Dmitri Peskov told CNN when asked, “as far as you know, did the two leaders discuss meddling?"
“Every time he sees me he says, ‘I didn’t do that,’ and I really believe that when he tells me that, he means it,” Mr. Trump said of Mr. Putin. “I think he is very insulted by it, which is not a good thing for our country.”
But the contradictions also reflect a more fundamental disarray in the presidency’s policy toward Asia. It seems caught between the geopolitical realism of Mr. Trump’s diplomats and the economic nationalism of his political aides and, to a great extent, Mr. Trump himself.
"President Trump and President Putin today, meeting on the margins of the APEC conference in Da Nang, Vietnam, confirmed their determination to defeat ISIS in Syria"
Day 295
Friday 10 November 2017
Flynn’s work for Turkey has been somewhat buried amid the Russia revelations, which is unfortunate because it’s fairly outrageous.
Based on the detection from monitoring stations and meteorological data, the mysterious cloud — which has since dissipated — has been traced to somewhere along the Russia-Kazakhstan border
These women aren’t props for your partisan gotcha tweets.
Brett J. Talley, President Trump’s nominee to be a federal judge in Alabama, has never tried a case, was unanimously rated “not qualified” by the American Bar Assn.’s judicial rating committee, has practiced law for only three years and, as a blogger last year, displayed a degree of partisanship unusual for a judicial nominee
On Thursday, the Senate Judiciary Committee, on a party-line vote, approved him for a lifetime appointment to the federal bench.
Russia plans new measures to restrict U.S. media working here after a Russian English-language TV channel said it was pressured into registering as a foreign agent in America
PETERS: So there’s no doubt though that that message of President Trump’s has appeal with white nationalists. Is that an unfortunate reality, an unintended consequence? BANNON: I think it’s, I think it’s, I think it’s nonsense. I think it’s nonsense.
PETERS: You’re saying it’s a media fabrication. BANNON: Absolutely, a hundred percent it’s a hundred percent media fabrication.
A federal judge has dismissed — for a second time — a pair of lawsuits seeking to force the State Department to do more to recover former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's emails.
When he did mention China by name, it was to rehash his “excellent trip” to the country
Trump and ... Putin will not have a formal sit-down meeting at the summit, putting to rest much speculation on the topic... “in terms of a scheduled, formal meeting, there’s not one on the calendar and we don’t anticipate that there will be one.”
Day 294
Thursday 9 November 2017
Senate Republicans outlined their vision on Thursday for overhauling the tax code, proposing a one-year delay in President Trump’s top priority of cutting the corporate tax rate while reinstating some prized tax breaks used by middle-class families.
...who called for banning all Muslims from air travel, said that women aren't interested in science careers and labeled low-income preschool parents "academically and socially needy."
GOP leaders desperately want Roy Moore off the ballot. But they have neither the legal nor the political leverage to force the defiant ex-judge out of the race.
The line failure took out 25% of Puerto Rico's power generation, which was at 43% capacity just before the failure
“Also take Joseph and Mary. Mary was a teenager and Joseph was an adult carpenter. They became parents of Jesus.” ... “There’s just nothing immoral or illegal here,” Ziegler concluded. “Maybe just a little bit unusual.”
